KIGALI (Rwanda), Dec 2 (Bernama-AA) -- Guinea’s Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah has called for an investigation into the violence and deadly stampede at a football stadium in southeastern Guinea that claimed at least 56 lives on Sunday.

In a statement released Monday, Bah said the investigation would aim to establish accountability for the tragic incident, which unfolded during the final match of a local football tournament in Nzerekore, Guinea’s second-largest city, located about 570 kilometres (354 miles) from the capital, Conakry.

“The demonstrations of dissatisfaction with the refereeing decisions led to stones being thrown by the fans, causing a deadly stampede. Hospital services report a provisional toll of 56 dead and several injured,” the statement read.

The government expressed its condolences to the victims’ families and paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

According to local media, the chaos erupted during the closing minutes of the match between the Labe and Nzerekore football teams. The violence reportedly began after Labe players disputed a goal scored by the rival Nzerekore team. Fans from both sides clashed, escalating tensions further.

The match was part of a tournament sponsored by Guinea’s President Gen Mamady Doumbouya.

The government has pledged to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of sports events in the future.
