PARIS, Jan 10 (Bernama-dpa) -- The international police organisation Interpol aims to improve the tracking down of criminal assets by using a new weapon in its armoury: the Silver Notice, according to the German news agency dpa.
For the first time, Interpol said on Friday it had sent out a Silver Notice, with which Italy hopes to obtain information from the other 195 Interpol member states about the assets of a high-ranking Mafiosi.
The request came specifically from the financial police in Palermo, Sicily.
The Silver Notice can be used to request information on income from fraud, bribery, drug trafficking and environmental crimes.
The tool is also designed to make it easier to track down laundered assets. Interpol says countries can then ask another member state to confiscate the goods.
"Depriving criminals and their networks of illegal profits is one of the most effective ways of combatting cross-border organised crime," said Interpol Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza.
The test phase will run at least until November. Initially, only 52 countries and territories can request the sending of a Silver Notice.
Interpol, based in the French city of Lyon, coordinates international police cooperation, for example by facilitating the exchange of information on wanted and missing persons.
