SEREMBAN, Feb 7 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Armed Forces Veterans Association (PVATM) will remain committed to its members’ wellbeing and economic standing by choosing to involve itself in the chicken-based food security industry to generate income.

Its president, Datuk Sharuddin Omar said the association chose the products to ensure the needs of the veterans and their families would be assured, especially in the current uncertain economic conditions.

"We chose food security as it suits veterans in helping their economic standing and at the same time will help the government stabilise the economy, especially in food supply.

"Although our contributions aren’t big, but at least we have a platform to help our own veterans,” he told reporters at the Veteran’s Fresh Chicken Sales Centre, which started operations three months ago.

He added that in the initial stage, they also collaborated with another company to help manage their products, and that the association currently had seven contract chicken farms in Johor Bahru that will produce fresh chicken for three main sales centres in Muar, Johor; Paroi, Negeri Sembilan and Bachang, Melaka that will be open next month, along with sales in Selangor.

Sharuddin said that besides fresh chicken being sold at RM7.50 a kilogramme, PVATM also produced several other products, including marinated chicken, whole chicken and cut chicken at lower-than-market prices.

"Alhamdulillah response has been very encouraging even though we have just started operations, demand is also very good. We received orders of 500,000 packets of marinated chicken from a Singaporean operator,” he said, adding that they intended to expand to Thailand, Brunei, and Indonesia in the future.

Besides food products, the assocation is also involved in the hotel business, he said, adding that they currently had two hotels being renovated, one in Paroi with 150 rooms, and the other in Kuala Lumpur with 330 rooms, which will be available to departments, ministries and the public.
