KAJANG, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- The Selangor state government, through Wanita Berdaya Selangor (WBS), launched the Women’s Leadership Academy (AKW) Special Edition for local authority (PBT) council members for the first time today.

State  Women’s Development and Community Welfare Committee chairman Anfaal Saari said the initiative aims to strengthen leadership skills and cultivate highly competent female leaders who are prepared to take on strategic roles in Selangor over the next five to ten years.

“The programme targets female council members from 12 PBTs and will be conducted through three workshop series over two months, including training sessions, interactive discussions, and expert-led sharing sessions in leadership and governance,” she told reporters after the launch here.

Also present was Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) deputy president Mohd Fareez Mohd Ariss @ Mohd Hatta.

Anfaal noted that the first workshop will focus on communication skills, leadership presence, and the roles of council members, while the second will address gender awareness and gender-responsive budgeting.

The third workshop will focus on local government administration, enhancing understanding of effective governance structures and processes.

Key areas of focus include strategic leadership, gender-responsive governance, policy-making, and the role of council members in planning and implementing inclusive and sustainable development,” she added.

This Special Edition of AKW is organised in collaboration with the Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry, MPKj, Shah Alam City Council, and Sepang Municipal Council.

Anfaal emphasised that the participation of 50 council members reflects the state’s commitment to empowering women’s leadership and enhancing their competencies in administration, in line with the Selangor Women’s Policy and Action Plan 2024-2026.

Launched in Sept 2019, the Selangor AKW programme aims to nurture female leaders for key roles within the state.

To date, AKW has produced 345 alumni across four cohorts, with the fifth cohort currently in progress, involving 100 civil servants.
