More Than A Gimmick, ‘Roti Pocong’ A Hit At Paroi Ramadan Bazaar

SEREMBAN, Feb 20 (Bernama) -- A Ramadan bazaar trader at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi here is drawing crowds again this year with his signature ‘roti pocong’ and martabak.

Now in his fourth year at the bazaar, Mohamad Firdaus Kamaruddin, 40, has proven that his 'roti pocong' is more than just a spooky marketing gimmick, offering a unique flavour profile that appeals to all ages.

First-time visitors to the bazaar are often greeted by a white-shrouded ‘pocong’ replica standing in front of his stall, a striking attraction that quickly draws attention.

“I am originally from Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, and previously operated under the name 'Raja Martabak' there. I believe that while a creative gimmick draws people in, it is the quality of the food that ensures a business remains sustainable.

“The ‘roti pocong’ features marinated beef or chicken cooked in barbecue sauce, wrapped in an omelette and roti canai skin, then topped with cheese. While the ingredients are similar to traditional martabak, the way it is wrapped to resemble a ‘pocong’ (shrouded ghost) makes it unique,” he told Bernama here today.

Mohamad Firdaus said his menu is priced between RM10 and RM18 and includes modern twists on traditional martabak, such as mac and cheese, spicy crispy chicken, grilled lamb with cheese, and grilled mozzarella smoked beef.

The trader, who also tosses his own roti canai, prepares 800 pieces of flatbread daily, with preparation beginning as early as noon to meet the high demand.

“The ‘roti pocong’ is definitely the crowd favourite. Even yesterday, many customers came specifically asking for it,” he said, adding that he only operates during Ramadan.

The father of five, who lives in Juaseh, Kuala Pilah, works as a nerve therapist outside the fasting month. Assisted by four workers, he said queues typically begin as early as 4 pm, with the stall operating until the 28th day of Ramadan.

A visitor who wished to be known only as Zaleha said it was her first time trying the ‘roti pocong’. She was drawn by its unique presentation and found the price reasonable for the generous portion.
