TUARAN, March 12 (Bernama) -- Sabah continues to strengthen energy security and environmental sustainability through the development of renewable energy, particularly with the 15-megawatt (MW) large-scale solar project in Tuaran.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the solar project reflected the strong synergy among government-linked companies (GLCs), particularly Sabah Energy Corporation (SEC), in line with the state government's policy vision to accelerate the energy transition.
He said this is the SEC's second solar project after the 5MW facility in Labuan, demonstrating the corporation's credibility and its technical and commercial capability in leading the renewable energy sector.
"This solar project does not merely add 15MW to the state's energy capacity but carries greater significance in transforming Sabah's energy structure,” he said.
He said this at the launch of the 15MW Tuaran Large-Scale Solar Project and the Ramadan Iftar event organised by the SEC at the Bajau Samah Cultural Centre in Kampung Lok Batik here today, which was also attended by SEC chairman Datuk Annuar Ayub.
The Chief Minister said that 150 workers, including local manpower, would be involved in the project, thus providing economic spillover to local communities.
Hajiji added that the initiative would not only help raise household incomes but also strengthen the green energy ecosystem in Sabah, in tandem with the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 (SE-RAMP 2040), which serves as a strategic compass for planning the state's future energy holistically.
"Through efforts to expand the use of renewable energy, such as solar and hydro, we not only balance the state's energy mix but also build greater resilience to global challenges and the climate crisis,” he said.
Meanwhile, Annuar said the solar project reflects the SEC's ongoing commitment to advancing the renewable energy agenda in Sabah.
He said the achievement not only demonstrates the SEC's technical and commercial capabilities, but also the agency's determination to support a sustainable and resilient energy transition for Sabah's future.
He added that the solar project also reflected the SEC's readiness to further diversify the state's energy sources, in line with Sabah's progressive and environmentally responsible development aspirations.
"We believe that investment in green technology is not meant to only meet current needs but also a responsibility for future generations,” he said.
