KUALA LUMPUR, March 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysian students in Jordan are safe and in good spirits against the backdrop of the conflict in West Asia that continues to warrant attention, said Malaysia’s Ambassador to Jordan, Datuk Mohamad Nasri Abdul Rahman.

He said as of March 15, 1,898 Malaysian students have registered with the Malaysian Embassy in Amman.

“Since the conflict erupted on Feb 28, the embassy has assisted 41 Malaysian students, 39 of whom are students in Jordan and two in Syria, either to return to Malaysia after completing their studies or to return to Jordan to resume classes,” he said, in a written response to Bernama regarding the latest developments concerning Malaysians in Jordan.

According to Mohamad Nasri, the current situation in Jordan is calm, peaceful, and stable, although there have been a number of incidents of Iranian missile interceptions by Jordanian forces.

“At the moment, all government offices, business premises, kindergartens, schools, universities, and the daily lives of the people have carried on as usual with no restrictions,” he said.

He said Queen Alia International Airport is also operating as normal with no issues for all inbound and outbound flights.

Mohamad Nasri said the embassy continues to monitor and analyse current developments to ensure the safety of Malaysian students in the kingdom.

He said the embassy had organised meetings with Malaysian students in several cities, including Amman, Mafraq, Irbid, and Mutah, to see how the group were doing as well as to give advice on security and consular matters.

One such meeting was on March 9, when Mohamad Nasri, along with embassy officials, held a large gathering of Malaysian students in the Jordanian capital of Amman. During the gathering, Mohamad Nasri took the opportunity to brief the students on current developments in the region in addition to sharing security advice and consular assistance that is available.

The students were also reminded to always prioritise their safety, to be alert to their surroundings, and to take precautions and adhere to local regulations.

They were also advised to check their flight schedules from time to time to avoid surprises such as cancellation or postponement of flights, which brings the risk of getting stranded in a third country.

On the occasion of the gathering, the embassy held a breaking of fast with the students, followed by a group prayer session.
