KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 (Bernama) -- The University College MAIWP International (UCMI), owned by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), was today officially proclaimed as University MAIWP International (UniMAIWP), following its upgrade on Dec 31 last year.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said that the elevation to university status by the Ministry of Higher Education reflects the institution’s maturity, as well as a renewed commitment to the future.

“The change in status from a university college to a university is not merely a rebranding exercise, but a symbol of institutional maturity, and a new commitment to shouldering greater responsibility in producing individuals who excel academically, and are firm in their values and principles,” he said in his speech at the 16th UniMAIWP Proclamation and Convocation Ceremony, held here, today.

He added that, since its establishment, the institution has provided access to education for those in need, particularly among the asnaf (eligible zakat recipients) and low-income groups.

“Education has uplifted dignity, opened opportunities, and built confidence in today’s generation. Under the stewardship of MAIWP, this institution is not only a centre of knowledge, but also a platform for holistic human development,” he said.

UniMAIWP was established in 1993 as a nursing school, under the management of Pusat Rawatan Islam Sdn Bhd, before being registered as Pusrawi Nursing College in 2003, and upgraded to the Pusrawi International College of Medical Sciences (PICOMS) in 2010.

In 2018, PICOMS was elevated to a university college under the name PICOMS International University College, before being rebranded as University College MAIWP International (UCMI) in 2022.

At the convocation ceremony, a total of 1,269 graduates across various levels of study - including Doctor of Philosophy, Master’s degrees, Bachelor’s degrees, diplomas and foundation programmes, as well as professional certificates - received their scrolls.

The ceremony was officiated by UniMAIWP Chancellor, Tan Sri Azman Hashim; Pro-Chancellor, Prof Emerita Datuk Dr Asma Ismail; and chief executive officer and vice-chancellor, Datuk Seri Prof Dr Noor Inayah Ya’akub.
