BEIRUT, April 4 (Bernama-dpa) -- The United States (US) has issued a warning to its citizens in Lebanon about potential attacks on universities, following Iranian threats and after an US-Israel airstrike on a major university in Tehran, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
"The security situation in Lebanon is volatile and unpredictable. Airstrikes, drones and rocket attacks occur throughout the country, especially in the south, the Beqaa, and parts of Beirut," the US Embassy in Beirut said on Friday.
"Iran and its aligned groups may intend to target universities in Lebanon," the statement said, adding Tehran had threatened US universities across West Asia.
The warning came after a leading university in Iranian capital Tehran was hit again in the latest airstrikes carried out by the US and Israel.
The medical research institute and the laboratory building at Beheshti University were almost completely destroyed in the attack, Tasnim News Agency reported.
The US embassy called on citizens to leave Lebanon, or to "be prepared to shelter in place should the situation deteriorate further."
The warning also "strongly encourages" US citizens in southern Lebanon, "near the borders with Syria, in refugee settlements, and in the southern suburbs of Beirut, including Dahiyeh, to depart those areas immediately."
