PARIS, Aug 9 (Bernama-dpa) -- Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Kristóf Rasovszky of Hungary improved his result at the Paris Games by taking gold in the men's 10-kilometre open water marathon on Friday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The world champion led for most of the race and completed the course on the Seine in 1 hour 50 minutes 52.7 seconds to finish 2.1 seconds ahead of Germany's Oliver Klemet.

Bronze also went to Hungary as David Betlehem powered his way to the podium in a tight fight with Italy's Domenico Acerenza and finishing just 0.6s ahead of the Italian opponent.

Tokyo 2020 champion and co-favourite Florian Wellbrock of Germany was only eighth. He led for parts of the race, but lost sight of the leading pack in the final laps.

The women's marathon on Thursday was won by Rio 2016 champion Sharon van Rouwendaal of the Netherlands.

Athletes competing in the marathon swimming events repeatedly faced training delays due to water quality issues on the Seine, which has been a problem throughout the Paris Games, also in the triathlon.

Training was cancelled on Tuesday after a reading for enterococci bacteria, which indicates the presence of faecal matter, was above the upper authorised limit.
