Cambodia Remains Steadfast In Combating Fake News

PETALING JAYA, Sept 3 (Bernama) -- The Cambodian government remains steadfast in its efforts to combat the pervasive challenges posed by fake news, which many countries are all too familiar with, according to its Information Minister Neth Pheaktra.

In this era of rapidly evolving technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), Pheaktra said everyone must work closely together to manage these developments and their impact on their countries and governments.

“In our digital age, the paradox we face is profound. The very tools that allow us to share knowledge with unprecedented speed and reach have also become conduits for misinformation and falsehoods.

"This duality presents a unique set of challenges that impact every aspect of our societies, from governance and public policy to personal relationships and community trust," he said in his remarks at the 19th Asia Media Summit (ABS) here Tuesday, which was launched by Malaysia’s Communications Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching.

Malaysia is hosting this year’s Asia Media Summit (AMS), with the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) serving as the event's secretariat.

Attended by several top-ranking broadcasters, decision-makers, media professionals, regulators, scholars, and stakeholders from within and outside the region, the Asia Media Summit provides a platform for intergovernmental dialogues to uplift the benchmarks of the regional media industry.

As disinformation increasingly poses a global challenge, Pheaktra highlighted the media's role in addressing this issue. He emphasised that the government, acting as policymakers and stakeholders, will work in collaboration with the media to achieve these objectives.

“Amidst shifting global dynamics, it is time for the media to take charge of the narrative for a better global community,” he said, adding that the Asia Media Summit, which began in 2004, was a valuable platform for the media industry to discuss and chart the way for media development.

Pheaktra said Cambodia was honoured to host the 16th Asia Media Summit in Siem Reap in 2019 where the Angkor 'Anti-Fake News' Initiative, the first fake news research in Asia-Pacific involving key public service media, was launched.

Cambodia, a long-standing member of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), is currently serving as the Vice President of its General Conference.
