SINGAPORE

 

1. ‘ONCE IN A LIFETIME’: MORE THAN 50,000 GATHER AT NATIONAL STADIUM FOR POPE FRANCIS’ MASS -- THE STRAITS TIMES

A crowd of some 50,000 people, from swaddled infants to white-haired seniors, welcomed Pope Francis to Singapore at the National Stadium on Sept 12.

 

2. 50,000 PEOPLE GATHER AT THE NATIONAL STADIUM FOR PAPAL MASS - CNA

Around 50,000 people gathered at the National Stadium on Thursday (Sep 12) to attend the first papal mass in Singapore since 1986.

 

CAMBODIA

 

1. CAMBODIA INAUGURATES NEW CONTAINER TERMINAL -- KHMER TIMES 

A new container terminal at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port was inaugurated to transform the port into a regional logistics hub. The 11.5m-deep terminal costing US$37 million once completed will increase capacity from 55,000 twenty-foot equivalent units to one million TEUs per year. 

 

2. GREATER MEKONG UNITES TO TACKLE PLASTIC POLLUTION -- KHMER TIMES

At the 6th Greater Mekong Subregion Environment Ministers’ Meeting held in Phnom Penh Member countries voiced support for solving the growing plastic pollution in the region. Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam agreed to improve plastic waste management infrastructure through regional cooperation.

 

MYANMAR

 

1. MOUNT POPA SEEKS UNESCO RECOGNITION — THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

Myanmar is trying to obtain UNESCO’s recognition for Mount Popa National Geopark. The extinct volcano located in the Mandalay region is Myanmar’s first national-level geopark and its upgrading will raise international awareness of the nation’s rich natural resources and cultural heritage.

 

2. MYANMAR JOINTS BRICS MEDIA SUMMIT IN MOSCOW -- THE GLOBAL NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR

A high-level delegation is attending the BRICS Media Summit in Moscow, Russia. The annual media summit that promotes information technology collaboration among member nations will be held from September 13 to 17 at the World Trade Centre in Moscow.

 

LAOS

 

1. AUSTRALIA DELIVERS DISASTER RELIEF AID TO LAOS -- VIENTIANE TIMES

Australia handed over eight tonnes of humanitarian relief supplies to the Lao government that will benefit some 200 families affected by natural disasters such as floods during the rainy season. The humanitarian assistance worth US$95,000 included basic essentials. 

 

2. LAOS-VIETNAM STEP UP BILATERAL TIES -- VIENTIANE TIMES

Laos and Vietnam’s top leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close party and state relations that are vital to the economic and social development of both countries. Cooperation in trade, investment, culture, education, and science and technology featured in  their agenda.

 

THAILAND

 

1. 36,000+ FAMILIES IN NORTH, CENTRAL THAILAND STILL FLOODED IN -- THE NATION

Severe flooding continues to impact 24 districts in seven provinces, with the situation worsening in some areas due to the Yagi storm.

 

2. PM SPEEDS UP FLOOD AID -- BANGKOK POST

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has instructed agencies to step up relief measures to help flood victims in flood-ravaged provinces in the North, especially Chiang Rai, as quickly as possible.
