HANOVER (Germany), April 21 (Bernama-dpa) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday slammed an announcement by US President Donald Trump to the effect that South Africa would not receive an invitation to the next Group of 20 (G20) summit to be held in Florida.
Addressing a press conference in the German city of Hanover alongside Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Lula said he had advised South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to travel to Florida, nevertheless.
"South Africa is a founding member of the G20," Lula said. "If South Africa gets thrown out today, Germany will be thrown out tomorrow, Brazil will be thrown out," he added, reported German news agency dpa.
He called on the German government to join Brazil in pushing for South African participation in the summit of leading industrialised and emerging economies.
Trump announced earlier that South Africa would not be invited to the summit, which is to be held in December in his Trump National Doral Miami hotel.
He has accused South Africa of perpetrating genocide against white farmers in South Africa - an allegation rejected by Pretoria and experts.
The United States boycotted the Johannesburg G20 summit at the end of last year.
