Sarawak Ports Authority To Begin Operations In Q2 2026

KUCHING, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Ports Authority is expected to begin operations in the second quarter (Q2) of next year.

Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Majang Renggi said the authority will serve as the single regulatory body for all ports in Sarawak.

“At present, the Sarawak Government has formed a task force to develop the administrative and management framework for the implementation of the Sarawak Ports Authority,” he said in reply to Datuk Paulus Palu Gumbang (GPS-Batu Danau) during Question Time at the Sarawak State Assembly sitting today.

On 7 May last year, the State Assembly passed the Sarawak Ports Authority Bill to establish a centralised body responsible for managing, supervising, regulating and administering all ports in the state.

Majang said the port consolidation process will be carried out in three phases: the interim phase, corporatisation and privatisation.

“In the interim phase, regulatory authority will be transferred from the existing port boards to the Sarawak Ports Authority as provided under the Sarawak Ports Authority Ordinance 2024.

“The corporatisation phase will involve converting the current statutory port boards into wholly state-owned companies under the Companies Act, allowing port management and operations to be market-driven with a focus on efficiency, financial strength and accountability, and preparing for future privatisation,” he said.
