Ilya Buang Adopts Softer, More Considerate Comedy Style

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- Actor/comedian Ilya Buang Shaharum’s perspective on comedy has matured, especially when considering what kind of jokes are appropriate for today’s audiences.

Ilya, 58, who is also a member of musical and comedy group Senario, said his life experiences have made him more mindful of boundaries and the impact each joke may have on the public.

“When you grow older, a lot of questions come to mind. Is it appropriate for me to make this kind of joke? When we do things that cross the line, it spreads to schools and even affects the children.

“I feel there are things that are no longer suitable for me to perform because of my age. If young people do it, it may look okay, but when older people do it, it can look bad,” he said after a recent press conference here to announce Senario’s upcoming concert in April next year.  

He added that comedy today is more diverse, and Senario also needs to adapt its approach to stay relevant.

Ilya said teasing others is part and parcel of comedy, but now he feels more inclined to be considerate of others’ feelings.

“Maybe because I’m now a grandfather, I’ve become more loving. I can’t bring myself to do things that might hurt someone, even if others might find it funny,” he said.

The ‘Zombie Kilang Biskut’ actor also said he has to be more careful about accepting offers to perform in view of his health problems.

“I’m dealing with ear problems caused by coughing and the flu, and I also have a heart artery that is 60 percent blocked, plus knee issues. All this means I can’t sing like I used to, especially when it comes to hitting high notes,” he said, adding that his group members have always been supportive and never made him feel sidelined.

Ilya and five other Senario members — Azlee Jaafar, Saiful Apek, Yassin Yahya, Lan Pet Pet and Wahid — are set to perform at their mega concert ‘The Last Kopek: SenarioUnion 30 Years’, which will take place at Idea Live Arena, Petaling Jaya, on April 25.
