BANGKOK, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- National shot put ace Nani Sahirah Maryata pulled off a pleasant surprise at the 2025 Thailand SEA Games by clinching the women’s shot put gold medal while simultaneously renewing the national record in the final at the Suphachalasai Stadium, here today.
Nani Sahirah dominated the competition after achieving a difficult-to-beat mark on her second throw of 16.36 meters (m) to confirm the gold and erase the previous national record of 15.39m, which she set at the Perlis Open Athletics Championship last year.
Home favourite Areerat Intadis had to settle for silver after throwing a distance of 16.04m, while Vietnam's representative Huyen Thi Kim took home the bronze with a distance of 15.92m.
Nani Sahirah's success saw the 24-year-old athlete improve upon the bronze medal she achieved in her SEA Games debut in Cambodia two years ago.
Earlier, the national athletics camp was also cheered when women's hammer throw champion, Grace Wong Xiu Mei, presented the first gold medal for the national athletics team during the morning session of the athletics competition.
Meanwhile, the athletics camp garnered a bronze after Mohamad Armin Zahryl Abdul Latif finished third in the 110m hurdles event, matching his personal best time of 13.85s.
The gold went to John Christopher Tolentino from the Philippines with a time of 13.66s, which is also a new Games record, while Chen Xiang Ang from Singapore settled for the silver after clocking 13.75s.
In the men's 400m event, Malaysia failed to defend the gold after the reigning champion Umar Osman only managed to finish fifth in the final with a time of 47.13 seconds (s).
The gold medal was won by Joshua Robert Atkinson from Thailand after being the first to cross the finish line with a time of 45.13s, followed by Ta Ngoc Tuong from Vietnam in second (45.53s), and Le Ngoc Phuc in third with a time of 46.21s.
