PUCHONG, June 29 (Bernama) -- Telecommunication Engineering College (TEC) has officially launched Malaysia's first Qualcomm Academy Training Centre, establishing a momentous national objective to upskill approximately 20,000 Malaysian citizens in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI) and 5G technologies.

This landmark initiative, forged by virtue of a strategic alliance with the United States-based enterprise Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., aims to expedite the cultivation of industry-ready talent and fortify the nation's digital workforce through structured instruction and internationally accredited certification programmes.

Director of TEC Suresh Kumar Kandasamy said the global platform offers an extensive repository of knowledge in information technology, AI, and 5G platforms to be leveraged by the local market.

“We are leveraging on that platform to empower our youth as well as our existing workforce to upskill their knowledge in 5G and AI, so that we have various use cases that can be enhanced that can be made use and practised in our industries.

“Apart from that, we aim to increase the employability rate and to increase their skills within our national workforce,” he told reporters after the opening ceremony here today.

Suresh said following the launch, TEC will roll out an initial pilot project with several higher education institutions to widen access to AI and 5G learning, adding that the launch ceremony was officiated by Seri Serdang assemblyman, Abbas Salimmi Che Azmi.

Meanwhile, Abbas Salimmi said the programme introduced by TEC was a highly meaningful effort, especially in exposing the younger generation to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) education.

“This TEC is something that I think is very good for our children, especially young people, as well as for further developing technology, especially AI, robotics and so on,” he said.

He added that the initiative serves as an excellent platform to produce skilled talent while urging stakeholders to think about nurturing full-time entrepreneurs who can pioneer AI and robotics-based technologies in the coming years.

During the event, TEC officially presented its Official Conferment of Collaboration Offer Letters to Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) and the Centre for Instructor and Advanced Skill Training (CIAST) to kickstart the pilot talent development initiatives.

The event was also attended by Department of Skills Development (JPK) deputy director-general  (Development)  Dr Azmi Ahmad.

Established as a leading TVET institution in Malaysia, TEC focuses on hands-on, competency-based learning across critical sectors such as cybersecurity, semiconductors and cloud computing.
