SINGAPORE, July 16 (Bernama) -- Singapore’s Defence Ministry (Mindef) and the US Defence Department have signed a statement of intent (SOI) on Data, Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) cooperation.

The SOI facilitates technological collaboration, enabling both defence establishments to discuss approaches and exchange best practices on leveraging data, analytics, and AI at speed and scale.

The US Defence Department in a statement on Monday said that under the SOI, the US and Singapore have identified key areas of collaboration such as quality data, the responsible development and use of AI, and talent management.

“This SOI represents an important opportunity to deepen collaborative efforts, strengthen interoperability, and promote values-based global leadership on responsible AI in defence,” the department said.

Meanwhile, Mindef’s statement Tuesday said US Defence Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III and Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen discussed bilateral cooperation in new and emerging technology areas such as AI during a meeting at the Pentagon, Washington on Tuesday.

They also welcomed the signing of the SOI, which builds on Mindef and the US Defence Department long-standing defence technology cooperation, in line with the 2005 Strategic Framework Agreement and Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), as well as the 2015 Enhanced DCA.

Ng is currently in the US until July 18 and is scheduled to speak at the opening night of the Aspen Security Forum in Aspen, Colorado.
