GEORGE TOWN, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- The Penang International Dragon Boat Regatta 2024(PIDBR 2024) is a platform where culture, heritage and international collaboration come together in celebration of the shared passion for dragon boat racing, says Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai.
Hosted at the picturesque Straits Quay Marina, he said this year’s event marked a significant milestone in the regatta’s history, bringing the action closer to the heart of Penang and offering spectators an unforgettable experience.
He said for the first time in nearly 45 years, the PIDBR 2024 had returned to a location near the iconic waters off Gurney Drive.
"Over the past two days, we have not only witnessed thrilling races but also celebrated the camaraderie and unity that this regatta brings to life.
"This year, we embarked on a new chapter by hosting the regatta at Straits Quay Marina, a venue that perfectly combines stunning views with convenience,” he said during PIDBR 2024 Closing Ceremony, here today, which was inaugurated by Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak.
Organised by the state government in collaboration with the Consulate General of China in Penang, and the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO), as main partners and sponsors, the competition also celebrates 50 years of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations.
Over 1,600 racers from 61 local and foreign teams gathered for the two-day competition which kicked off yesterday.
