KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 31 (Bernama) -- Global air passenger demand reached a record high in 2024, with total traffic rising 10.4 per cent compared to the previous year, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
In a statement, IATA said total air traffic, measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs), exceeded pre-pandemic (2019) levels by 3.8 per cent.
“Total capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), increased by 8.7 per cent, while the overall load factor indicating how full flights were hit a record 83.5 per cent, marking the highest for full-year traffic,” it said.
IATA director general Willie Walsh said that 2024 proved that people have a strong desire to travel.
“With 10.4 per cent demand growth, travel reached record levels both domestically and internationally, with airlines meeting this demand with record efficiency.
"On average, 83.5 per cent of all seats were filled, a new record high, partially attributable to the supply chain constraints that limited capacity growth,” he said.
Looking ahead, IATA expects air travel demand to continue growing in 2025, albeit at a slower rate of eight per cent.
"The desire to partake in the freedom that flying offers brings some challenges into sharp focus. The tragic accident in Washington reminds us that safety requires our continuous efforts, “ he said.
Walsh also highlighted the industry's commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050, stressing the need for greater availability and affordability of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
"While airlines invested record amounts in SAF purchases in 2024, less than 5 per cent of fuel needs were met with SAF. Governments can strengthen their national energy security and unblock this problem by prioritising renewable fuel production,” he said.
IATA represents some 320 airlines, accounting for 83 per cent of global air traffic.
