Cloud Seeding To Be Carried Out In Melaka, Johor Next Week, Says Arthur

KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- Another cloud seeding operation (OPA) will be carried out next week in Melaka and Johor following prolonged hot and dry weather conditions, said Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup.

He said his ministry, through the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), has been closely monitoring the current weather situation, which has recorded rising temperatures of up to 37.5 degrees Celsius amid the monsoon transition period.

“Last week, we started some cloud seeding operations in several states, and we saw some success. However, the increase in river water levels has not yet reached the desired target.

“Therefore, we have received requests to carry out another cloud seeding operation in Johor and Melaka next week as a mitigation measure in response to the ongoing hot and dry spell, which is expected to persist until May and June,” he told the media on the sidelines of the pre-launch of International Sustainability Week (ISW) 2026, here today.

As part of earlier mitigation measures, the government has conducted a four-day OPA on April 6 in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), focusing on major dams in Perlis, Kedah, Kelantan, Perak, Pahang, and Johor to help sustain water supply for domestic and agricultural needs.

Meanwhile, Arthur also said, Malaysia will remain in close communication with neighbouring countries as the dry conditions could heighten the risk of transboundary haze if fires occur in other countries.

He added that continuous monitoring and advisories will be issued as the situation develops.
