KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 (Bernama) -- The tradition of visiting friends and relatives during the Gawai Dayak celebration, better known as Ngabang, continues to serve as a symbol of Sarawak’s uniqueness and strength in celebrating cultural diversity while reinforcing the spirit of togetherness.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the practice, which is synonymous with the Iban community, is not merely a festive tradition but also an important platform for nurturing mutual respect and strong bonds of brotherhood.

“Through this tradition, familial and social ties are strengthened, differences are celebrated, and the spirit of togetherness continues to flourish.

“This is the uniqueness of Sarawak, a land rich in cultural diversity and traditions, yet always united by the values of mutual respect, understanding and enduring brotherhood,” he posted on Facebook today.

He pointed out that such diversity was how Sarawak derives its strength, making it a proud example of harmony and unity.

“May the spirit of Gawai continue to serve as a bridge that connects hearts, strengthens bonds of friendship and kinship, and nurtures gratitude for the peace and prosperity that we enjoy together. Happy Gawai Dayak, Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai,” he said, adding that he attended the Gawai Open House hosted by former Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang and his family at their residence today.

The event was further enlivened by the presence of Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg, who joined in the celebration in a warm and harmonious atmosphere.

“Alhamdulillah, I had the opportunity to meet and catch up with old friends while enjoying the Gawai celebration filled with warmth, joy and a strong family spirit.

“The smiles shared, the laughter exchanged and the reunions that took place are a beautiful reflection of the harmony that has always been the strength of this state,” he said.
