KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 (Bernama) -- A proposal to incorporate explanatory elements related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) into the training modules of the Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) has been initiated through preliminary discussions, as part of efforts to strengthen public understanding of the federal spirit that underpins the formation of the nation.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said first-stage discussions on the matter are being refined to ensure that both the approach and content are clearer and more easily understood by the public.
“Let us not forget that, in addition to claiming our rights, we also have a responsibility to build the nation. Both must go hand in hand. We want Malaysians to understand that while we demand our rights, we must also come together to uplift the country.
“We are trying (to implement it this year). I personally want this module to be implemented as soon as possible because it is important to enhance public understanding,” he told reporters after officiating the AKM Federal Territories office here today.
He said the explanatory elements are crucial in enhancing understanding and fostering a sense of togetherness among the people, particularly regarding MA63, which forms the foundation of Malaysia and should not be viewed as an issue concerning only Sabah and Sarawak.
“Many view MA63 as an issue involving only Sabah and Sarawak. They do not realise that MA63 is the backbone of the formation of this country, as we (Borneo) agreed to form this nation together.
“Among the matters is that several provisions need to be included in the Federal Constitution and implemented. That is also part of the current issue. I believe AKM plays a very important role (in disseminating and enhancing public understanding),” he said.
Earlier in his speech, Mustapha said the formation of Malaysia was not merely an unification of territories, but rather a bond built on mutual understanding, trust and a spirit of togetherness between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
He said the AKM Federal Territories comprising Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya serves as a bridge to connect understanding between regions, taking into account the unique history, culture and identity of the people in Sabah and Sarawak.
“Therefore, the nationhood elements promoted by AKM must continue to emphasise this narrative so that it is truly understood and appreciated by all Malaysians.
“As the Minister responsible for Sabah and Sarawak affairs, I see AKM’s role as highly significant in strengthening understanding of the formation and spirit of the Malaysian Federation,” he said.
