NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Bernama-dpa) -- UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Monday welcomed the recognition of a Palestinian state by a number of countries, reported German Press Agency (dpa).
"Let's be clear: Statehood for the Palestinians is a right, not a reward," said the Portuguese diplomat at a New York conference on a two-state solution for the Middle East, convened by France and Saudi Arabia.
"I welcome the measures many member states are taking to galvanise support for the two-state solution, including pledges to recognise the state of Palestine," Guterres said.
The UN chief also indirectly criticised the United States for denying visas to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and his delegation.
"I also want to acknowledge the Palestinian delegation and once again note my disappointment that they were denied the opportunity to be fully represented," he said.
