Sutra Foundation Presents Malaysian Contemporary Dance Production

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (Bernama) – Sutra Foundation is set to mesmerise dance enthusiasts once again with its critically acclaimed production, ‘Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang 2.0’, a contemporary modern dance showcase running from Jan 31 to Feb 2 at the Shantanand Auditorium, Temple of Fine Arts, in Brickfields here.

Directed and choreographed by Malaysia’s renowned dance icon Datuk Ramli Ibrahim, the production features three distinctive performances – Revelling, Stand by Me and the titular ‘Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang’.

These performances highlight the rich and diverse cultural tapestry of Malaysian contemporary dance, intertwining traditional and modern elements.

The production, supported by Yayasan Hasanah under the Arts for All Seasons 2024 initiative in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, reflects Sutra Foundation’s commitment to redefining modernity through Asian perspectives.

Ramli, a recipient of numerous accolades including the Padma Shri award from India and Malaysia’s National Living Treasure award, expressed pride in presenting a production that resonates with Malaysian audiences while elevating the nation’s artistic heritage on the global stage.

"Dance is a celebration and liberation of the body, mind and soul," he said in a statement to Bernama.

The programme begins with Revelling, a vignette inspired by Balinese and Javanese cultures, accompanied by compositions from Colin McPhee and Lou Harrison.

The second performance, Stand by Me, makes its world premiere with music by Chinese-American composer Alex Dea, exploring themes of transformation, love and human connection.

The evening concludes with ‘Malam Bulan di Pagar Bintang’, a nostalgic homage to classic Malay songs by the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee and Saloma.

Sutra Foundation, under Ramli’s stewardship, has consistently championed Malaysia’s performing arts scene since its establishment in 2007. Known for its meticulous productions, Sutra integrates innovative choreography, stunning visuals and cultural authenticity.
