IRAN’S PRESIDENT PEZESHKIAN CALLS RUSSIA A STRATEGIC PARTNER

MOSCOW, Jan 17 (Bernama-IRNA) -- Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has highlighted the strategic significance of Iran-Russia relations, expressing confidence in their continued expansion across various sectors, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

Speaking during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday, Pezeshkian underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral ties, following the signing of the Treaty on a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.

During the meeting at the Kremlin, Pezeshkian conveyed the greetings of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to Putin and reiterated the Leader’s support for deeper cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.

He noted that Iran-Russia relations are steadily progressing both regionally and bilaterally.

Referring to the newly signed treaty, Pezeshkian pointed out that the agreement provides a strong foundation for advancing collaboration in security, cultural, and commercial fields.

On nuclear cooperation, the Iranian President described the progress of a joint agreement for the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Iran as satisfactory.

He added that a new accord in this regard has been finalised and will soon enter the operational phase.

For his part, emphasised that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty would help expand economic cooperation between Russia and Iran, allowing for greater diversification of their bilateral relations.

Putin also noted that trade between the two countries has been growing at an acceptable pace, revealing that bilateral trade increased by over 15 per cent in the first 10 months of 2024.

The discussions between the two leaders also covered a wide range of topics, including trade, investment, transport, logistics, humanitarian cooperation, and key regional and international developments.
