LUMUT, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- The government will establish a special committee to study a proposal to place the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and matriculation programme under the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE), instead of the Education Ministry (MOE).
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the move is part of a process under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which comes into effect next year.
“It will take some time as the committee’s report will be tabled in Parliament, followed by amendments to the existing Act,” he told reporters after attending the Fishermen Resettlement (PSN) Key Handover Ceremony at Teluk Gadung Open Area, Pulau Pangkor, here today.
On Dec 7, Zambry said the proposal aims to better coordinate the student evaluation and admission process for university entry and is among the major reforms outlined under the 2026–2035 Higher Education Development Plan.
He also dismissed claims that the proposal would disadvantage certain races, stressing that such allegations are baseless and that a comprehensive study is still required.
“We take note of these concerns, but it is too early to draw conclusions on a matter that is still inconclusive,” he said.
